Bushmeat hunting is emerging as a major threat to many species of wildlife in Africa, largely due to the rapid growth of urban populations. Pangolins are particularly vulnerable, as they were already facing extinction in Africa and Asia. In addition to the consumption of their meat in Africa, the export of pangolin scales to Asia for use in traditional Chinese medicine is a major contributing factor to their declining numbers. Senior consultant for WildAid Simon Denyer discussed the consumption of pangolin meat in Cameroon cities and the results of WildAid’s 2021 study.

Overview

Pangolins consists of eight species, all of which are native to sub-Saharan Africa or tropical and subtropical Asia. Cameroon is located in Central Africa, which is home to the following three species of pangolin: the black-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla), the white-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tricuspid), and the giant pangolin (Smutsia gigantea).

WildAid’s report focuses on the impact of unsustainable bushmeat hunting, especially of pangolin, and examines the factors that are driving the consumption of pangolin meat. The recent and rapid development of large cities in sub-Saharan Africa like Cameroon is generating significant demand for bushmeat that exceeds the sustainable harvest rates of many species. The value of the wild meat trade in Central Africa was valued at between $1 billion and $3 billion even 20 years ago. While up-to-date figures are hard to come by, hunting is certainly depleting wildlife populations.

Methodology

WildAid conducted its study on pangolin consumption in September 2021, interviewing consumers of bushmeat in restaurants and markets in the Cameroonian cities of Douala and Mbalmayo. The idea was to focus on frequent consumers of bushmeat to examine their habits and preferences in detail. Douala is the economic capital of Cameroon with a population of around 3 million people, while Mbalmayo is a smaller city of 70,000 people in the center of the country, which links rural areas with the capital Yaoundé. The study was conducted ahead of the launch of a major campaign launched by WildAid in February aimed at curbing the consumption of pangolin meat and raising awareness of the importance of wildlife conservation.

Results

Porcupine was the most frequently eaten form of bushmeat, with 75% of respondents having consumed it in the past 12 months. The second most frequently eaten species was pangolin, with 49% of respondents having consumed it in the past year. This finding was considerably higher for pangolins than found in similar studies commissioned by WildAid in Nigeria and Gabon, Denyer said, exposing the availability and demand for pangolin meat in Cameroon.

Other popular and frequently consumed forms of bushmeat in Cameroon included crocodile, snake, rat, duiker, and monkey. Consumption of other endangered species, including gorilla, chimpanzee, manatee, elephant, and leopard was reported, although less frequently. When respondents were asked which forms of bushmeat they would eat if the cost was not an issue, pangolin topped the list as the most popular choice, followed by porcupine and crocodile. These findings dramatically underline the threats to Cameroon’s pangolin population from urban consumption, Denyer said.

Asked why they chose pangolin meat, 55% said it was tastier than other forms of bushmeat. A further 22% either said it was fresher, healthier or contained fewer chemicals than regular meat or fish, while a total of 11% either said it was a luxury or said it conferred higher status than other forms of bushmeat. Conversely, when respondents were asked why they had last chosen regular meat or fish, 57% said it was more accessible, and 52% said it was cheaper. Just 5% said it was healthier, 3% said it was tastier, and only 2% cited laws about bushmeat.

Discussion

Although bushmeat markets are associated with the transmission of zoonotic diseases from animals to humans, Denyer said the results showed that consumers saw bushmeat as fresher and healthier than regular forms of meat. Along with a clear preference for the taste of pangolin meat, that represents a significant challenge to any conservation awareness campaign.

The study also found that awareness of Cameroon’s own laws was low. In 2017, international trade in all eight species of pangolin was banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and the government of Cameroon followed suit by banning the hunting, capture, killing and trade of all three indigenous pangolin species. However, only a third of bushmeat consumers were aware it is illegal to buy pangolin meat, while 82% said the recent change in the law had made no difference to their consumption of pangolin meat. 

Summary

The most frequently consumed types of bushmeat in Cameroon include pangolin, porcupine, crocodile, hedgehog, rat, monkey, duiker and antelope. Pangolin is the favorite when money isn’t an object, but survey respondents also showed strong preferences for porcupine and crocodile. This list includes many endangered species, raising serious concerns about the sustainability of bushmeat hunting to support the demand from growing cities in Cameroon. Simon Denyer and WildAid’s study also shows that bushmeat consumption is strongly embedded in Cameroon’s culture, as many people feel that it’s fresher and healthier than other forms of meat.

However, Denyer said WildAid’s studies have shown that pride in Cameroon’s wildlife is high among city dwellers, while many are also proud that pangolins exist in Cameroon. WildAid’s campaign aims to raise awareness of Cameroon’s laws making consumption of pangolin meat illegal, and raise awareness that pangolins face extinction if current trends continue. 

“It’s really encouraging to see how much pride Cameroonians have in their incredible wildlife, and in pangolins specifically,” Denyer said. “People here have lived in balance with nature for countless generations, and it is really important to restore that natural balance before it’s too late.”

Just one week after receiving approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to conduct human trials of Russia’s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine, Indian pharmaceutical company Dr. Reddy’s announced it was a target of a cyberattack. In a statement released on October 22, Chief Information Officer Mukesh Rathi told the National Stock Exchange of India that the company had to isolate all its data centers to contain the attack. He added that they anticipate all services to be up and running within 24 hours, while the incident shouldn’t impact any of the operations. The Indian headquarters wasn’t the only one affected, but also worldwide sites, including ones in the US, UK, Russia, and Brazil.

Dr. Reddy’s refused to comment on whether its manufacturing facilities had been affected or not. But according to local media reports, production in some premises was disrupted. Moreover, the company’s phone lines in the Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire sites in the UK were down, but there was no confirmation if this is connected to the attack. Dr. Reddy’s supplies medicines to the NHS in the United Kingdom, with a headquarters in Beverley, Yorkshire. It produces more than 200 medicines for oncology, gastroenterology, pain management, and cardiovascular conditions.

In a recent update on the cyberattack incident, the company confirmed that it involved ransomware – malware that enables hackers to access and encrypt corporate data, files, and systems. The pharmaceutical company said it promptly contacted external cybersecurity experts to investigate and address the issue while also launching a “comprehensive containment and remediation effort.” The statement added there were no indications of compromised personally identifiable information stored in the system so far. “Recovery and restoration of all applications and data is underway. All critical operations are being enabled in a controlled manner,” the statement continued.

RESIST COVID TAKE 6! reveals Weems in a new light, as she steps away from her signature photographic tableaux and into the realm of agitprop art. The “TAKE 6” of the title describes the mandated six feet of social distancing urged of persons during the pandemic. In a sequence of commanding billboards, Weems confronts viewers with the realities of this international health crisis while simultaneously providing notes of gratitude to workers within the health and service industries and making direct appeals for people to take preventive safety measures. With emphatic insistence, Weems implores passersby: “WASH YOUR HANDS, COVER YOUR FACE, KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE & GET TESTED!” The powerful text is projected against images that deliver a visceral gut punch. The words stretch across a frame of Black and Brown bodies — those statistically most likely to succumb to this relentless disease.

“I’ve worked on this project every day since March,” Weems said, describing how the idea originated in a conversation with longtime close friend Pierre Loving in the earliest days of the pandemic in the U.S. After conversations with SCAD’s Paula Wallace in late spring, following social unrest in the wake of George Floyd’s death, Wallace invited Weems to bring her work to SCAD locations in Savannah and Atlanta.

Weems has a long and celebrated history with SCAD, which has hosted several Carrie Mae Weems exhibitions at the SCAD Museum of Art and other university galleries. In 2008, Weems served as a distinguished visiting professor at SCAD Atlanta, collaborating with SCAD students on “Constructing History: A Requiem to Mark the Moment,” a short film commissioned for the National Black Arts Festival in 2008. Eight years later, in 2016, Weems was honored for her lifetime achievements at SCAD deFINE ART and delivered the keynote address at SCAD’s Trustees Theater in Savannah. That same year, Weems staged Carrie Mae Weems: Considered at the SCAD Museum of Art in the Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies.

“One of the important things is to understand the circumstances under which we live. This means unmasking inequity, because then you begin to see the power structures that are under it to keep you fighting one another as opposed to really looking at really the source of the problems,” said Weems. “The arts allow us to get closest to our humanity.”

This summer, Weems spoke with Paula Wallace for her SCADcast “On Creativity” podcast. “As a new public-facing art initiative, not only does RESIST COVID TAKE 6! raise critical health awareness, but it shines a light on how this pandemic has disproportionately affected Black, Latino and Native communities,” Paula Wallace said. “We are delighted to be partnering with Carrie Mae Weems, longtime friend of SCAD, to bring this important work to Atlanta and Savannah. This public art project shows SCAD students how artists engage in moments of public need.”

“Ai Weiwei is making masks, Jon Batiste is doing these wonderful concerts in public parks, open-air performances,” Weems said, speaking with admiration about how SCAD alumni and artists around the world are responding with creativity and compassion during this unusual time. “So many are exploring new ways for presenting material and work, using technology and computers and even our phones in ways we couldn’t have even imagined six months ago.”

The exhibition is currently on view in the exterior jewel boxes at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, visible to pedestrians on Turner Boulevard, and in light boxes at the main SCAD Atlanta campus in Midtown, viewable by thousands of motorists and pedestrians at 1600 Peachtree Street.

Additionally, shopping bags, buttons, flyers, and hand-fans are being distributed by Meals On Wheels Atlanta and philanthropic organizations in Savannah, directing audiences to COVID-19 testing sites and other resources during this time.

It is Weems’s desire that RESIST COVID TAKE 6! will prompt immediate concern for health and wellness among BIPOC communities and also spark worldwide awareness and action to end the pandemic and prevent future disasters from occurring. This initiative is also being activated in multiple cities nation-wide including Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Detroit.

He said that he wanted to become an artist in New York and he did not realize that coming to Los Angeles and trying to become a movie start was completely different.

Three Months Until The Move

Start planning your move. Check over your house and decide what you’ll be packing and what you’ll be throwing out. Don’t start packing yet, just prepare a mental inventory.

Consider having a yard sale to get rid of things that you don’t want to take with you.  If you have furniture that’s been sitting in the garage for a while collecting dust, this is a good chance to get some money for it.
