A Quick Guide To Australian Gin

For the past five years, gin has become super popular in Australia. Given that, gin-making distilleries have expanded rapidly. It has gone from about ten distilleries to over a hundred today.

You can attribute this popularity to the exquisite taste and energetic spirit of Australian gin. It also has seen a surge in demand internationally. So, you can be sure that the trend is not dying out anytime soon.

As a consumer, the plethora of distillers means you have a wide range of choices for experimentation. It ranges from Lemon Myrtle, Finger Limes, Bush Tomato, Pepperberry, and seaweed.

Now, it’s time to dive deeper into the world of gin.

What’s So Special About Australian Gin?

Compared to the well-established European gin market, the Australian industry is taking baby steps. Nonetheless, it is experiencing a boom because of the unique botanicals employed in its making.

This gin industry is unique because it is still in its experimental stage. So, new flavours and aromas are springing up every other month. Further, most of them are of excellent quality.

Australia also has a lot of native botanicals that do not naturally grow anywhere else in the world. Besides, Australian distillers have a non-conformist and non-precious approach common in British and other well-established gin distilleries.

The Aussie gin has something edgy and genuine about it, whether in technique or ingredient. As for the taste, it is rich with botanicals and gives a wholesome mouthfeel.

What Goes Best With Aussie Gin?

If you are bored with the usual Gin and Tonic, Aussie gin provides you with excellent options. You can mix it with flavourful cocktails and personalize it to your taste.

You can consume it with classic cocktails since it goes well with vodka. Alternatively, you can pair it with distillery-created cocktails. If you enjoy drinking citrus-flavored gin, you can pair it with water to enjoy a maritime drink.

The best way to drink small-batch gins is by adding some ice cubes and a slice of orange. This way, you can preserve the subtle flavors stemming from the botanicals.

Food Pairing for Aussie Gin

Although Aussie gins use unique botanicals, they follow a familiar pattern when pairing with food.

For citrus-infused Aussie gins, you can match it with seafood dishes. Some of the best pairings include pan-fried salmon and seafood salads. Or, you can pair it with steamed fish, shrimp, or prawns.

You can pair smoked meat with intense flavors like lamb curry for Aussie dry gins. For craft gins, you need to consider the botanicals carefully before pairing the food.

You can also pair gin and ice with fruit berries or chocolate if you have a sweet tooth. It can be blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, or cranberries.

Wrapping Up

Growth in European gin markets like Spain, Italy, and the UK has always been exceptional. Contrastingly, the Australian gin industry has surged in popularity and hit new highs in the past five years. Yet, they are competing with the established market on an international scale.

Besides, many small bars are moving from big cities to small towns. This is an excellent opportunity for the gin industry. Customers have shown an improved and insatiable appetite for Aussie gin in the past few years.

Unlike traditional gin, Aussie gin can blend perfectly with vodka, water, and ice. From dry gin to small-batch craft ones, they go perfectly with a wide variety of food flavors.

So, if you haven’t tried it yet, it’s time to open a bottle today!

Wine Racks

A well-chosen wine rack design can help you store and age your valuable wine collection efficiently and adequately. A wine rack is an essential item of furniture and decor in the house of a wine enthusiast. If you’re adding to your existing collection of wine, a wine rack can be a lifesaver by providing safe storage for your bottles and glasses.

Furthermore, if you want a simple tabletop stand to store bottles close at hand or an extensive wall wine rack, well-designed wine storage can preserve your wines in good form so you may appreciate them the way they’re meant to be.

What Are the Benefits of Having a Wine Rack?

A fantastic wine collection requires a proper storage solution, no matter how large. Having a decent wine fridge is essential for bottles that need to be kept at a specific temperature for drinking or long-term cellaring.

Here are several advantages of owning a wine rack:

  1. It saves room and may be placed in any corner or surface of the house, depending on the design chosen.
  2. It is long-lasting and sturdy because most wine racks are wood, metal, wrought iron, or thick glass.
  3. It adds a lot of visual appeal to the room and can serve as a focal point or conversation starter.
  4. It aids in the correct positioning and conditioning of wine bottles, allowing them to develop correctly and retain their quality and flavor over time.
  5. It protects your wine from vibrations, which may disturb its sediments and decrease the wine’s quality.

Rustic and Contemporary: Different Kinds of Wine Rack

Using modern style wine racks allows homeowners to view the majority of each wine bottle on display, including the label, making it easier to identify a specific wine without taking the bottle from the rack.

1. Wine Wall Storage- Do you have a vast wine collection and want to build a modern art-style installation? You can invest in a wall wine rack. The idea is to convert a whole hallway into a wine rack using wood paneling with holes created to fit the neck of a wine bottle perfectly.

While this concept may necessitate the assistance of a professional, the ultimate result will undoubtedly be a talking point.

2. Cellar-Style Storage- Make a wine cave in your home by installing a wine rack like this one, which has notched wood and should fit all of your cherished bottles.

If you want to turn a space into a cellar, be sure you can seal it for optimal wine storage.

3. Gorgeous Barrel-Style- The Home Depot barrel-style wine rack has a unique retro look and can accommodate 18 wine bottles. It is crafted of fir, and it measures 24 inches tall by 23.25 inches broad by 10 inches deep.

One of these racks can be stacked on top of two others in a triangle design without any specialized tools.

4. Rustic Riddling Rack– Wine bottles are meant to be tilted at an angle so that yeast and sediment can collect around the entrance and eventually be removed.

They also serve as rustic storage for typically finished wine bottles and can be readily created.

5. Rack with Zig-Zag Pattern- This handcrafted wooden wine rack has a distinctive zig-zag design that is functional and visually appealing.

It comes in various sizes that may hold anything from 4 to 16 bottles.

Overcoming an addiction isn’t easy, whether your vice is gambling, drugs, drink or something else. To stop for any length of time takes hard work. Stopping doesn’t always mean the hard work is over, and temptation can often still be there. However, there are ways to combat the cravings. Going through addiction rehabilitation is one of the most difficult things you can experience in life. Nevertheless it should be one of the last. Remember that once you are clean you are almost reborn. You can take on life with a new perspective and new goals in mind.

Seeking help

While it’s recommended to surround yourself with people who will support and encourage you, it’s also advisable to seek therapy. Friends and family have your best interests at heart, but don’t always know the best thing to say or do. An online therapy app, such as Relief Seeker, allows you to find professional help based on your individual needs. So, whenever you feel yourself struggling with temptation, or just need to talk things through with someone, help isn’t far away.

Reminding yourself why you stopped

Sometimes it’s important to remind yourself how your addiction was affecting you and why you stopped. Perhaps you were struggling to pay bills because you gambled and lost more money than you could afford or drinking too much was spilling over into your work life and personal relationships. It’s important to remind yourself of this when temptation tells you just a small bet or one glass of your favorite tipple won’t hurt. While the psychology of addiction is complicated, addicts generally can’t stop at ‘just one’ of their vice. Addiction can often lead to anxiety, so this is another reason not to give in.

Looking at what you’ve achieved

If stopping your addiction has led to better health, more money, better relationships or an improved work life; writing a list of achievements as a result of stopping, can enforce your willpower. There might be other smaller achievements too, which are just as important. Weigh these up against the initial buzz of giving in to your addiction (and the inevitable downside afterwards). Writing a list can be helpful. If you keep this list where you’re likely to see it when you’re tempted, that could help strengthen your resolve. It may not be easy, but it will be worth it.

Finding other things to do

Distracting yourself from any withdrawal symptoms or temptations may work for you. If you can find something you enjoy doing, such as sports, crafts or learning a new language – as well as the benefits of your new hobby or interest, you’ll be keeping your mind off thoughts of your addiction. This may not be immediate, but when you find yourself ‘in the zone’ there’s a good chance your mind will only be focused on achieving your personal best 5k run, getting your latest pottery creation just right, learning a phrase in your chosen language or anything else related to your chosen hobby. If you can find something that works just as well in a group, you’ll be able to surround yourself with people you share a healthy interest with. If you have friends who are still struggling with an addiction, while it’s admirable to want to help them, surrounding yourself with people who might add to your temptation isn’t healthy. You won’t be able to help them if you’re struggling to help yourself.

Spotting a pattern

Keeping a record of when you’ve come close to giving in to your addiction or have suffered the most with withdrawal symptoms, can help you spot a pattern. If you go out with friends for a meal and they enjoy a few drinks, it can be tempting to give in if alcohol is your addiction. Likewise, gambling on a night out at raffle or charity bingo might seem harmless to your friends but could be too much of a temptation for you. Knowing what sets you off helps you avoid those situations. You might have to explain to friends why you can’t join them or, for example, you have to leave a restaurant after one course before they start drinking. Most people should be understanding.

Walking away

Sometimes, even friends who care about you might struggle to grasp the seriousness if they haven’t experienced addiction for themselves. Even if they have, they might compare their own situation to yours, failing to recognize everyone’s experience is different. Walking away from trigger situations might be the only option. Hopefully, your friendships will survive this, but if not, remember you have to do what is best for you.

Following these suggestions while seeking professional help and getting support from family or friends can help to combat your addiction and increase the chances of not giving in when temptation strikes.

Beer has been in existence throughout history. The oldest known recipe that ever existed in the world is about beer. The ancient Egyptians first documented the beer brewing process on papyrus scrolls during 5000 BC. Back then, the brewing process involved the inclusion of pomegranates, herbs, and dates.

If this beer recipe were to be followed today, the resulting beer would have a very harsh and alcoholic taste. In today’s standards, most people drink beer not to get drunk but for the taste and would rather drink mid-strength beer in Australia than beer with a high Alcohol by Volume (ABV).

Australia is known for its laid-back culture where residents enjoy a beer or two after work. However, not many Australians know much information about the beer they are drinking unless they are beer connoisseurs.

It is therefore important to know some information about beer to have a better understanding and appreciation for one of Australia’s most favourite beverages. Knowing some information about beer can also make you sound smarter after you have had a couple of bottles in you.

The Two Main Types of Beer

While there are a lot of styles of beer that you can choose from, these beers can be classified into two main types depending on their fermentation process, namely: Lagers and Ales.

 Ales

Ales were the earliest types of beer and are fermented using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, also known as top-fermenting or ale yeast under warm temperature conditions of around sixty to seventy degrees Fahrenheit.

Cerveza, the Spanish term for beer, may most likely originate from the yeast used in the fermentation process. Or, was the yeast named after the beer? Hold on to this question as a conversation topic the next time you go out for drinks with your friends.

The warm temperatures used in the fermentation process allows ales to ferment and age faster. Ales may be produced in as little as three to five weeks. With modern technology, microbrewers today are using ale yeast to produce their craft beers in just a week or two.

When you see medieval movies of knights or warriors drinking ale before a fight and not stumbling, please do not mistake it for the superior strength of the knight, rather, credit it to the lack of strength of the beer.

Ales, during the medieval ages, are unfiltered, have a rough consistency, and have just enough alcohol content to act as a preservative (1 % or less ABV).

 Lagers

Lagers are made from a fermentation process that uses Saccharomyces pastorianus yeast variety. Lagers undergo a bottom-fermenting process and take longer to ferment and require very low temperatures.

With the invention of refrigeration, lagers became more popular since breweries now have the technology for keeping the fermentation process colder for longer periods.

Which Type of Beer is Better?

Both Ales and Lagers are still considered beer. The single difference between the two is how they were fermented. Nevertheless, because of the cold fermentation process, lagers tend to have a cleaner and crisper taste than ales. However, you can incorporate ingredients such as malts and hops to make the flavour of lager more robust.

On the other hand, ales have more body, are sweeter and fruitier in taste. The rapid fermentation process in warm temperatures produces the sweet-tasting esters. In terms of alcohol content, Ales usually have higher Alcohol by Volume content. Lagers, on the other hand, can be considered as mid-strength beer in Australia because its ABV falls in the 3.5 % range.

Have you always wanted to brew your own beer?

Are all the guides out there confusing you when it comes to brewing?

Do you know which elements are going to help you get the perfect brew?

Is it possible to get some fantastic expert advice from the best in the industry on brewing?

If you have to ask these questions of late, then congratulations, you have come to the right article!

If you always been intrigued about brewing the perfect beer but did not know how to start, we are going to help you. According to brewing experts, brewing is as much a science, as it is an art.

This means that you would need as much help from science and technology as you would from experience and YouTube tutorials. In recent years, home brewing has grown all over the world. From relatively modest beginnings into full competitions, home brewing is becoming huge.

In this article, Melvin Brewing, one of America’s foremost breweries helps you brew the best beer.

A Perfect Guide to Brewing: The Steps

  • Select the right ingredients-

Everyone knows the basic ingredients when it comes to brewing. The malts, the barleys, and the hops form the fundamentals. However, the key is where are you buying them from. It is always better to buy the ingredients from a farmer’s market rather than from your supermarket shelves. Going organic is another way to impart that natural goodness.

  • Choose the right Beer brewing Equipment-

Brewing home beer can be both affordable as well as expensive. All of it depends on what kind of equipment you are using. You will always need a Bucket for brewing, some siphon hose and a good quality bubbler. While you can get these things from Amazon, it is best that you visit your nearest store and ask experts for the complete demo.

  • Set the right Boiling Temperature to Steep-

Most people who fail at home brewing make the mistake of over boiling and steeping over extended periods. Melvin Brewing states that you should set the temperature at 80 degrees Celsius. The Steeping process should not be done for more than twenty minutes. It is important to not boil the grains too much as it should never be overcooked.

  • Malt when the time is right-

It is important not to hurry this, as it is probably the most important step of the brewing process. The steep needs to cool down to 70 degrees Celsius before the malt is added. This imparts the best flavors of the malt into the brew. After adding the malt, you would need to add the water and the yeast to start the fermentation process.

  • Play the Waiting Game-

After you have done all the work, you are naturally over eager to see the fruits of your labor. However, it is important for the brew to grow and settle for at least two weeks before you see the finished result. If you do not see any bubbling from the bubbler, you have done well. Wait another three days after this and you are good to go.

Conclusion

Brewing the best beer is all about patience. Most people also ask about the costs involved. Let me state that home brewing is not a cost-effective mechanism.

However, the majority of people who home-brew want to do it for their passion. It is something that gives you bragging rights in front of your family and friends over a barbecue.

By following the above step-by-step guide, you can rest assured that you will end up crafting a good brew.

Australians are famous for their love of alcohol with most outsiders viewing Aussies, alongside the Irish, as the hardest drinkers in the world. It is quite a reputation and one that has been cultivated over a long period of time. Fuelled by famous stories of excess, like the David Boon bender, on a flight with the Australian cricket team, from Sydney to London ahead of an Ashes Series. But while Australians are famous for their drinking, what is it that they drink? Scratch the surface and you will soon see that Aussies are not just beer drinkers, there is a lot of other action going on as well.

Spirits

As is the case with the rest of the world, Australia has recently seen a huge upswing in the consumption of gin. For a long time, the old standard of gin and tonic was powered by Gordons or Tanqueray. But a lot has changed in recent times with micro-distilled and artisanal gins becoming the order of the day. In this regard there is plenty of uniquely Australian gin available in the market and it is currently one of the most popular beverages in Australia. Sample some of the local products at a gin bar near year. What is interesting about gin is that it can be distilled in around a day. Unlike other drinks that take a lot longer to mature and age, a good gin is ready to be drunk within twenty-four hours.

Wine

Australia is very famous for its wine and is currently the fifth-largest wine-producing country in the world – and the largest in the southern hemisphere. The only countries that produce more wine than Australia are Spain, Italy, France and the United States of America. Interestingly though, when placed on a list of highest wine consumption by litre per capita, then Australia fails to register in the top twenty on a list that is topped by Andorra and Croatia.

You cannot avoid beer

Ask almost anyone what drink they associate with Australia and they will more than likely say beer. Push them harder for a name and they will almost certainly tell you Fosters, Victoria Bitter of VB and XXXX. Of course, there are plenty of other brands and the craft revolution has firmly taken hold in Australia, but if you ask anyone from the outside world how they view Australians, those are the stereotypical Australia brands that they will know.

It’s not all alcohol

Despite their reputations as hard drinkers Australia does also produce some beverages that are unique it is own and completely alcohol-free. One of these is the very popular Bundaberg Ginger Beer.
