In May, Amazon announced it had ordered up two more gavel-pounding helpings of Judy Justice, which debuted on the streaming service in November 2021 and is now in Season 3. Freevee viewers can’t get enough of the small claims cases and Judge Judy Sheindlin’s hilarious clapbacks: Shut your mouth! Just a second!

“How shall I describe my feelings about the renewal of Judy Justice on Amazon Freevee?” mused Sheindlin in a statement announcing the deal. “Gratifying, certainly. Grateful, of course. In exploring the continued success of the program, I do believe that people long to see old-fashioned justice administered with an even hand. A little humor doesn’t hurt. I intend to deliver both for as long as I’m able.”

Since its debut, viewers have pressed play on 150 million hours of the sassy 5-foot-2 judge from Brooklyn, New York.

The series has racked up armfuls of shiny, golden Emmys through the years, and so, too, has the man behind the camera capturing it all: Randy Douthit.

Randy Douthit’s Career in Rewind

Douthit’s journey through the entertainment landscape began when he was in his early 20s, working as a local TV director in his native Oregon. After cutting his teeth with local newscasts, he eventually landed at CNN, where his knack for translating ideas into compelling content was evident from the outset. There, he executive-produced and directed Crossfire before going on to conceive and executive-produce a little show called Larry King Live. However, it was Randy Douthit’s pivotal role alongside the legendary Judith Sheindlin that truly cemented his name in the industry’s annals.

And from day one, Douthit confesses, he knew there was magic when the cameras rolled on the no-nonsense Judge Judy.

“With Judy in our very first year, I had a very strong feeling that we were going to be a hit show,” recalls Douthit. “We were on the lineup of all independent, small stations. But if you looked at the ratings pages, you could see that at a certain time, there was a big pop, a big growth. And so that was very interesting to see. And as it turned out, I was correct. It was a hit show as of the first year.”

Judge Judy debuted on Sept. 16, 1996, and went on to run for a whopping 25 seasons, making it one of the longest-running court shows in TV history.

Now that Douthit’s behind the camera at Freevee, he and Sheindlin plan to cook up more courtroom magic for viewers. Amazon recently greenlighted Justice on Trial, a docuseries that reenacts history-making court cases. It’s the brainchild of Sheindlin, Douthit reveals, and he’ll be along for the ride, of course.

Among the industries hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic has been the movie business. U.S. box offices have lost billions of dollars. Movie theater attendance hit record lows. The number of movies being released in theaters decreased 66 percent in 2020, the first year of the pandemic.

Probably the most noticeable change, as Bardya Ziaian and others note, has been the meteoric rise of streaming services during this uncertain time.

Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ were already growing in popularity before the pandemic. But once people were quarantined in their homes and then later afraid to leave them, streaming services became the place to consume film content globally.

In fact, streaming subscriptions passed one billion during the pandemic, according to the Wall Street Journal in March 2021.

Then in 2021, HBO Max raised the stakes even higher by concurrently streaming new Warner Bros movies. “We think it is increasing viewership overall because we’ve opened up accessibility to people where they can see it at any time, anywhere,” Jim Wuthrich, president of home entertainment and content licensing at WarnerMedia, told Deadline in August 2021.

The widespread adoption of streaming services has led the film industry to face new realities: (1) The demand for content has grown exponentially and (2) these evolving platforms present a lot of new creative opportunities.

Combined, these two trends mean filmmakers have a lot more opportunities to let their visions see the light of day. Abysmal.

That singular word describes the box office returns for the American film industry in the year 2020. With the pandemic tearing through the states, Hollywood—a long-standing beacon of filmmaking prowess not only in the West but the world—became crippled, reporting an 80% loss in profit over the previous year.

We’re more than halfway through 2021 and box office tallies are only slightly better than that. With more films beginning to release in theaters through 2022 and beyond, and should the pandemic slow down or (hopefully!) go dormant, we can expect those numbers to rise steadily. Still, it’s a long climb back to pre-pandemic numbers when the U.S. domestic film industry was raking in over $10 billion a year.

Americans aren’t the only ones feeling the film industry slap. India and Asia, two major hubs for feature-length film productions, have seen their box office numbers sink to new, devastating lows.

The recent, moderate success of Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, shows that theaters aren’t ready to shudder just yet, but how long can they stay open should we see another upswing in the sick and affected?
